Pre-Need Planning

Plan ahead.
Give your family peace of mind.

Making arrangements in advance is one of the most thoughtful decisions a person can make. It removes uncertainty during a difficult time and allows you to make choices that reflect your own wishes.

Why plan ahead?

Pre-need planning gives you control over the decisions that matter most — burial location, service type, memorial preferences — at a time when you can reflect calmly rather than in a moment of grief.

Burial options

Evergreen Cemetery offers traditional in-ground burial in a variety of sections, as well as above-ground entombment in our mausoleum. Our staff will walk you through available spaces, monument options, and ongoing care.

Cremation arrangements

Our on-site crematory provides direct cremation, cremation with memorial service, and pre-arranged cremation trusts. Cremated remains may be interred, placed in a columbarium niche, or returned to the family.

Pre-need trust & payment

New Jersey law requires that pre-need cemetery funds be held in trust, protecting your investment. We work with licensed trust companies to administer your arrangement. There is no obligation to purchase until you are ready.

We encourage families to take the time they need. Our staff is here to answer questions — not to sell. There is no pressure and no timeline.

Family Planning Guide

A thoughtful guide
for families in grief.

This guide is written for families navigating loss — whether you are making immediate arrangements or simply trying to understand your options. Take whatever time you need.

Contents

  1. Immediate steps after a loss
  2. Understanding your options (burial, communal burial, cremation)
  3. Working with the cemetery
  4. Grief and support resources
  5. Frequently asked questions

1. Immediate steps after a loss

When a death occurs, the immediate hours and days involve a series of practical steps alongside grief. You do not need to do everything at once, and you do not need to do any of it alone.

If the death occurred at home or outside a medical facility, contact local authorities first. A death certificate must be filed before any arrangements can be completed. In New Jersey, a licensed funeral director typically manages this process on the family's behalf.

Once you have engaged a funeral home, they will coordinate the technical and legal requirements, including transportation of the deceased, filing of the death certificate, and communication with the cemetery. You may contact our office directly at any stage of this process.

You are not expected to know exactly what to do. Every family walks through this for the first time. Our staff is experienced in guiding families gently through each decision.

2. Understanding your options

There is no single right choice. Burial and cremation are both honored traditions, and the best decision is the one that aligns with your family's values, beliefs, and wishes of the deceased.

Traditional burial

In-ground burial in a cemetery lot allows for a marked grave site that family and loved ones may visit over many years. Options include individual lots, companion lots for two, and family estate lots accommodating multiple generations.

Communal burial

Communal burial provides a dignified resting place within a shared section of the cemetery, without the purchase of a private lot. A permanent record is maintained for every individual interred, and family members may visit the section at any time. This option is chosen for its simplicity and lower cost.

Cremation

Cremation offers flexibility in timing and memorialization. Cremated remains may be interred in the cemetery, placed in a columbarium niche, kept by the family, or scattered in a legally permitted location. A memorial service may take place before or after cremation.

Entombment

Above-ground entombment in a mausoleum provides an indoor, climate-controlled resting place. Evergreen Cemetery maintains a mausoleum open for visitation during office hours.

3. Working with the cemetery

Evergreen Cemetery coordinates directly with funeral directors for all interment arrangements. If you are making arrangements without a funeral home, our staff will guide you through the process step by step.

Key items we will address together include: selection of a burial space, scheduling of the committal service, monument and marker requirements, and any special requests regarding the service itself.

We ask families to allow at least 48 hours' notice for weekday interments and to confirm all arrangements in writing. We will provide a written confirmation of all details.

4. Grief and support resources

The weeks and months following a loss can be deeply disorienting. Many people find structured support helpful during this time. Below are resources available in New Jersey and the surrounding region.

  • Overlook Medical Center Grief Support (Summit, NJ) — free community grief groups
  • NJ Hospice & Palliative Care Organization — bereavement counseling referrals
  • Trinitas Regional Medical Center (Elizabeth, NJ) — grief counseling services
  • The Compassionate Friends (tcforg.org) — support for bereaved parents
  • New Jersey 211 Helpline — connects callers to local mental health and grief services
Grief has no schedule and no correct form. Whether you feel grief immediately or much later, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

5. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between traditional burial and communal burial?

Traditional burial involves the purchase of a designated lot — a specific, recorded plot in the cemetery that belongs to an individual or family. A marker or monument may be placed, and family members can visit that exact location for generations. The lot remains part of the family's estate and can accommodate additional interments if a companion or family lot is purchased.

Communal burial does not involve the purchase of a private lot. Individuals are interred in a designated communal section of the cemetery, and a permanent record is maintained on file. There is typically no individual marker at the graveside, though the section itself may carry a shared monument or inscription. Family members are welcome to visit the section at any time. Communal burial is available at a significantly lower cost and is chosen for a range of personal, practical, and philosophical reasons — all of which are equally respected by our staff.

How soon after death must burial or cremation occur?

New Jersey requires that final disposition occur within a reasonable timeframe, typically within a few days without refrigeration or embalming. Your funeral director will guide you on the specific timeline based on your circumstances.

Can we hold a graveside service?

Yes. Graveside services are common and may be held at any time of year. Our staff will work with you on logistics, including seating, coordination with clergy, and timing.

Are veterans' burial benefits available?

Yes. Evergreen Cemetery participates in the VA National Cemetery Scheduling Office program and can assist eligible veterans and their families with burial benefits. Please notify our office of the veteran's service status when making arrangements.

Can we visit the cemetery outside of office hours?

The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. The administrative office is staffed during posted business hours only.

What happens to my pre-need arrangements if I move away?

Pre-need trusts are transferable in many cases. Please contact our office to discuss your specific situation, and we will work with you to explore all available options.

Our History

A garden of memory
since 1853.

For more than 170 years, Evergreen Cemetery has served as a place of quiet remembrance for families across Northern New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area.

On the evening of March 23, 1853, a group of civic leaders gathered in the Borough of Elizabeth to form a rural cemetery association under an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Chaired by the attorney Francis Barber Chetwood and recorded by Secretary Josiah Q. Stearns, the meeting brought together William Brown, Richard T. Haines, Joseph Cox, Henry Higgins, Caleb J. Luster, Pulaski Jack, and others who shared a common vision — a park-like resting place that would offer solace to the living as much as dignity to the departed.

Twelve trustees were elected by ballot that evening to manage the new association: Richard T. Haines, William Brown, John L. Norris, Lewis W. Spaulds, John H. Ralston, Apollos M. Elmer, Isaac M. Ware, Frederick A. Phelps, William A. Loy, Chailey A. Higgins, Josiah Q. Stearns, and Francis B. Chetwood. They named the institution "The Evergreen Cemetery" and chose a site near the Township of Elizabeth in what was then Essex County. The articles of incorporation were formally recorded on March 26, 1853.

The founding came during the era of the rural cemetery movement, a landscape design philosophy inspired by Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Laurel Hill in Philadelphia. The original grounds were laid out along the gently rolling terrain of what would become the township of Hillside, surrounded by farmland and within easy distance of Newark's rapidly growing immigrant communities. From its earliest decades, Evergreen served as a burial ground for families of diverse backgrounds — Irish, German, Italian, and Eastern European immigrants who built the towns and industries of northern New Jersey.

Francis Barber Chetwood, the association's first chairman, was a prominent Elizabeth attorney and the son of former mayor William Chetwood. He remained a guiding force in the cemetery's early development until his death in 1875. Chetwood himself was laid to rest at Evergreen — a testament to the faith the founders placed in the institution they created.

1853

Evergreen Cemetery is incorporated on March 23 following a public meeting in Elizabeth. Twelve trustees led by Francis B. Chetwood and Josiah Q. Stearns are elected, and the first sections of the grounds are surveyed and laid out.

1880s

Rapid growth of the Newark metropolitan area brings increased demand. New sections are opened in the northern and western areas of the property. A carriage road system is established throughout the grounds.

1910

The main mausoleum is completed, offering above-ground entombment for families seeking an alternative to in-ground burial. Its architecture reflects the Beaux-Arts influence prominent in institutional buildings of the era.

1940s

A veterans' section is established to honor those who served in World War II. Evergreen Cemetery becomes a participant in the federal veterans' burial benefits program, a relationship that continues to the present day.

1970s

The on-site crematory is established, reflecting changing preferences among New Jersey families. Evergreen becomes one of the first cemeteries in the region to offer both burial and cremation services on the same grounds.

2000s

A new columbarium is dedicated, expanding options for the placement of cremated remains. Digital records management is introduced to supplement and protect the original ledger books dating to the cemetery's founding.

Today

Evergreen Cemetery continues to operate as a family-serving institution, maintaining more than 170 years of continuous burial records and stewarding the final resting place of thousands of families from across the region.

The landscape

The grounds of Evergreen Cemetery were designed to evoke a pastoral landscape — a garden of memory rather than a solemn field. Mature oaks, elms, and evergreen plantings give the grounds their character through every season. The maintenance staff maintains these plantings with particular care, recognizing that the appearance of the grounds reflects the respect we hold for those interred here.

Notable interments

Evergreen Cemetery is the final resting place of many who contributed to the civic, religious, commercial, and cultural life of northern New Jersey. While we do not maintain a formal registry of notable interments, families conducting research into local history are welcome to contact our genealogy office for assistance.

Records preservation

The original interment ledgers from 1853 onward are held on-site. A digitization effort begun in the early 2000s has converted a significant portion of these records to a searchable format. All records are available for research inquiry through our genealogy request process.
